Lots of cheap 999's for sale.

Have been noticing many private sale 999's for sale, ( I know this is no small wonder ) but these people are taking a sensational beating. I wonder if any of these owners will be turned off of Ducati because of this experience?

I don't think that they will be "turned off" by the experience. It is the same as any other capital investment we may make. There is always a risk. The tri 9's had more of that risk because many, if not most, did not like the styling. And styling truly is key to italain bikes. The triple 9's styling definitely fell short, and the nails were driven into the coffin as soon as the performance specs of the new 1098's were released. Thats the nature of the high end SBK market. Everyone is always trying to best the other guy, and Ducati just happened to blow out there old model like a ton's worth of C4 plastic explosive!

Now 998's are to be had for about 10k!

I wouldn't call a motorcycle a capital investment. Although there are some rare circumstances when that could be true.

Undertstood, but loosing %40 percent of the purchase price of your bike in the first year of ownership SUCKS.

It is a capital investment. When I come due for a home loan and they ask what I can leverage, I will be using my paid in full tri-colore. Hell it is practically a piece of italian art! It is at the minimum an asset investment that can be used as leverage if needed to be.

As someone who has gotten a couple of mortgages...

They don't care about guns, motorcycles, guitars, art...

Italian or otherwise.

I would love to see some guy in a loan officers office some day saying "....but it's ALL Chong glass, man..." ...I bet it has happened!

Seriousy though (sorry, I shouldn't poke fun), They wouldn't care if you had five Vincent Black Shadows in a crate with sequential serial #'s...

If you need a mortgage and you can scrape up about 5-7% I would think a job and a pulse would be all that's required...

???

The word investment and sportbike do not belong in the same sentence. However, I did some old cycles owned by Indian Larry sell for a lot. :biggrin

But speaking of which, some guy was selling a 749 for $4800!

I wouldnt be surprised to see many 999's stolen (by their owners) and claims brought to insurance companies.... It may be the only way to get rid of those 999's. Ducati had a *hard* time selling them *before* the 1098 was introduced. How are people going to sell them now?

When it is time for you to get a home loan, your MLO will be looking at your debt to income, debt to credit and and average of your 3 credit scores. If they chose to give you a loan, the home will be all the collateral they need.

you can buy an '06 999 for $11,500.00 MAX these days....
maybe even $11,000.00.

an '06 999S in Black for $15,000.00 would STILL be a very nice purchase... no?

Speaking of the 999s. Is anyone familiar with a limited production 999s? supposedly only 100 were built or maybe 100 were signed by someone famous. Anyway, a dealer here has one, which I was considering until I heard about the 1098. They wanted $20,000 pre 1098.

It's a Parts Unlimited 999s, signed by Ben Bostrom and Neil Hodgson. Limited run of 150, $19995.

Yeah, I'm considering the team usa 999s as well, but only because it is the only one left at my dealer and I prefer the 999 to the 1098.

However, there is no way I am willing to pay $19,995 for a 999, since the 1098 base (which, suspension aside, can be argued to be a supperior bike) is $14,995.

Argued to be superior? I haven't seen one piece of suppporting evidence that the 999 trumps the 1098 in any way whatsoever. If you like the looks of the 749/999 so be it, but the 1098 is an all around superior machine to the 999 hands down.

I think he is saying the 1098 is superior. Thanks for the posts. I'm not going to buy it.
