I've had them all and the Ducati 996 was way ahead of the MV Agusta 750 and Gixxer 1000 in feel. The brakes and engine were all superior.

The MV 750 engine felt like a weak GSXR600 from 1999-2000. The brakes faded and were not strong at all. I hope the F41000 is better but the brakes look the same.

:1

However, on the street, you don't need one at all. Actually, I never wanted one on my '05 ZX-10R because on that bike I really only used 3 or 4 gears on the street anyway since it had so much power. But, on my 600, you are constantly shifting gears and I use all 6 of them so for me knowing what gear I'm in at any given time is a welcomed feature.
Don't know if we are in the minoritiy, but I am right there with ya. Had a gear indicator on my gixxer 1000, had one on my RC51(no more hunting for 7th gear), and here is my racebike, check out the gizmo in the upper left corner..

And you called it just right. I am slow, a novice, no where near fast, but I am learning. I be coming down the straight at Summit Point main, at about 140mph, and I DO want to know what gear I am in.
