The next best thing to racing...

...is taking pictures of racing, as far as I'm concerned!

In 2008 I began making the transition from motorcycle roadracer to roadracing photographer (and part-time racer), and really learned a lot and improved my skills along the way.

Here are some of my favorites from the year, all from Miller Motorsports Park in Utah - including the Masters of the Mountains club series, the AMA/WSBK races, and AHRMA races:

Thanks! Most of them were shot with my Canon 1D Mark III, using a rented Canon 400mm f2.8 IS lens, some with a 1.4x converter, since they make you stay pretty far away from the action at Miller. The WSBK ones were shot with my previous camera, a Canon 30D with a 100-400 f4-5.6 Canon IS zoom.

bwhip,

Awesome pictures! Can you tell me what settings you used on your camera? I'm using a cannon rebel xti (cant afford the big dawg Cannon 1D) I assume you were shooting time value. I normally shoot motorcycle pics at Time Value, 1/800 - 1/1000 shutter speed, with an ISO of 200 on a sunny day. Just wanting to see what you're shooting at, you're pics turned out great! Thanks

Thanks very much. Normally I do shoot in shutter-priority mode. If I'm freezing the action, as in #2 and #3, with bikes coming at me or going away from me, I'll use 1/800 to 1/1250, and if I'm panning, as in #1, I'll use 1/250 to 1/400. I'll vary things with shutter speed and ISO a bit depending on the amount of daylight available and how long a lens I'm using.

A buddy of mine wrote articles with some pretty good ideas here:

bwhip,

Great articles, thanks for posting them up. Thats exactly what I was looking for as far as information on taking pictures of moving objects. Now I want to try all these different settings on my camera. Thanks again for all the info.

That's in "Release," the final turn heading into the straight on the east side. Shane (#14) Turpin has some nice lean angle in photo #7 as well, so I used his image for my logo:

I think these are some of the best racing images I have ever seen. Congratulations!

These photos really capture the beauty and the intensity of the sport. Well Done.

Thanks! These are all at Miller in Utah. Shot #13 is entering a three-turn section known as the "Attitudes." In late May there was still a good bit of snow on the mountains beyond, so I couldn't resist capturing that background.

Very very nice shots. I'd rather buy these ones (esp #13) than pics of myself at a track day...

If you ever get a chance to take a picture of a ducati, like Shot #13 post up. That is sure a nice view! Wouldnt mind having for a desktop background.

I can't take credit for the pic, but here's one from that same weekend that was very similar, featuring the greatest 1098 rider ever:

I found it at my favorite racing wallpaper site:
