Hey Guys,
Done a few K's on the 1098S and contrary to what I've read just about everywhere I think the rear spring is a little soft. I put a small zip tie around the shock shaft (like you do the front forks.) and it was bottoming out on the standard settings. I tried more preload but the plastic adjuster stopped playing the game after about 5 mm. I used the genuine Ohlins adjuster spanner and it chipped the plastic preload adjuster so now I'm going to replace it with an ally one. Figured while I'm there might as well change the spring. The bike seems to squat on the power even with the 5 mm preload I've added. Anyone got any experience/recomendations? Want to keep the stock shock as I do carry a pillion occasionally otherwise I'd be putting a race shock in the back for sure...:twisted

I agree. I've done about 1,000 KLM on my S that I picked up in November. My impressions of the handling of these bikes is that they are very limited due to the incorrect springs rates supplied with the bike. (I weigh 84 KG before riding gear) Front spring rate is too stiff. Rear spring rate is too soft, but feels stiff in the garage due to the shit-load of pre-load the bikes come with (about 22mm I think which is waaaay too much). Hit a bump mid-corner cranked over and the whole chassis dances around and the bike can change line.
I'm taking mine to Krooz Tune in Wantirna next week to get re-sprung and race-spec valving put on. Just coz it says Ohlins on the side doesn't seem to mean a lot. I think the guys in this forum that say the rear is too stiff are just feeling the impact of the excessive pre-load.

Cool, Thanks Mark. I got a 95 aswell. Getting a preload adjuster from Traxxion so as soon as it lands will get the spring in. Let me know how you go????

Tell me about the pre-load adjuster. Got a link?

This is the link for the article I saw on the forum. I've listed the link for the bearing and adjuster at the bottom. Will let you know when mine lands.

Thanks for that.
(But Doh! I'm too late cause I picked up my bike this morning & to fit the adjuster would mean taking the rear shock out again!!)
Cheers,

Got the 95 rear spring on my bike and what a difference. Turn in is so much better and the bike holds its line really well. Definitely a must have upgrade. Ended up fitting the aluminium preload adjusters and bearing kit, thanks to Dan Kyle and Traxxion. Preload is heaps easier to adjust and am so glad to be rid of the ridiculous plastic ring fitted as stock. Just need to get my slip ons and I'll be set...:thumbup:yahoo

Good stuff mate. I knew you would like it!

I've got a 1098R coming in 3 weeks so I suppose I'll have to go through the whole thing again :bangdesk

Saw the 1098R at World Supers at the Island a few weeks back and it had a 90 spring fitted. Anyway, I'll ride it & see what it's like first.

Congrats on your mods though. Hope you enjoy :thumbup

Forget the mods congrats on the R mate. That should be awesome. Be sure to post up some pics when it lands. My S is just a toy but the R would be a dream..:thumbup:yahoo
