What up Duc lovers. My name is Jason and I am here in very cold Cincinnati, Ohio. I have not ridden since I was a kid and recently picked up a Ninja 500r to brush up on the basics. I don't think I will be ready for a 1098 just yet but I am I in love with the damn bike. To be honest this is all the fault of a guy named Theo and Phil who is running this site. I am a total bike nut now and hooked for life. Since I am telling the world about myself I am gonna throw out a question to everyone. I am getting ready to sell my 500r and pick up the next bike. Like I said the Duc I love is out of my price range and skill level at this point. However, I was thinking about a used 749 or even a 600 like a gsxr. Any thoughts would help in the decision making process. Once again hola to all and happy riding.:moped

Welcome Jason :beer
Well, if you love the Ducs i say get a 749 and ride it for a year or so and then get the 1098 :cool

I agree with you that if you feel you are not ready for the 1098, that you should ride a 600 or 749 for at least a year. Now if you know you will be buying a 1098 in the near future, I would buy a used bike that you think you will loose the least amount of money on with the resale or trade-in. Just my 2 cents.

welcome jason
so glad to have you here
a used 749 would be great
but.....
tell us more about you and what you want out of this bike
because..... it's possible that a used Suzuki SV650 might be a better bike for you at this moment.... and TONS CHEAPER to own and operate
we'll be happy to help in any way that we can

What's up Jason - yeah, blame Phil and I - no problem - after all I am THE ENABLER!
Not sure you are going to get a better deal than the Suzk 600 down south... But the 749 is a viable option - used (mayhaps a 05) is going to run 9 to $10K. Anyone got better ideas on used 749 prices?
You know, jsdp is right - if you are going to get the 1098 in a year or three, a used GSXR might be a better way to go (again depending on the deal). After a few years on the GSXR, you may want to keep it as the track-ho and get the 1098... If you buy new (GSXR), I would plan on keeping it at least three years - other wise, but used.

Welcome aboard and I must say your level of maturity is very refreshing. There are some (soon to be a statistic) who believe there is nothing too fast for them, irrespective of experience, and really bad things happen to them. It sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders. If it were me, I would wait til March and see what the 749 market is like. There is going to be a correction in xx9 market because of 1098, but it should have shown it's hand by then. You will probably get a lot of bike for not much money. Phil (the other one)
