the armour-piercing rounds (of which i have enough to "last me awhile") are illegal to carry these days
also made:
subsonic.... also illegal to carry
so...
i have the "LEGAL" rounds
it's a toss-up between the kimber and 5-7 as to which to carry
i rarely carry
i have a permit
i ride on my bike alone at night not infrequently
that's when i carry
the kimber is FAR smaller.... but, much heavier than the 5-7
they both shoot straight as an arrow
right out of the box

Is your 5-7 barrel threaded for a silencer? That's the only reason subsonic rounds would be useful for anyway.

getting .45s to fly SUBsonic is much easier
one reason to thread the FiveSeven is because that gun has ABSOLUTELY NO RECOIL...
so, it is much more desirable as a "stealth" weapon
also....
surpressing the sound of a .45 is nearly impossible
the sound of the hammer (or other device) "igniting" that 230gr load would only be "silent" during a riot :biggrin

surpressing the sound of a .45 is nearly impossible
the sound of the hammer (or other device) "igniting" that 230gr load would only be "silent" during a riot :biggrinI don't know much about much, but I know a lot about this. The only sounds you will hear when you fire a gun is the initial blast as the bullet leaves the barrel and the ballistic crack as it goes supersonic. Using subsonic (<1000fps) takes care of that. Using a suppressor, for the most part takes care of the initial blast by re-directing the sound waves inside the can. (the design of baffle stacks is a closely guarded secret by most manufactures).
The hammer falling makes virtually no noise. Take my word on this, I've suppressed everything from .22 to 50BMG and other than .22, .45ACP is overall the quietest common caliber to suppress.
Yes, suppressors are legal in florida. Machine guns too, but that is another thread.
Check here http://www.subguns.com and here http://www.sturmgewehr.com for information on suppressors (cans) and how to buy them. Or, shoot me an email or pm and I can walk you through it.

Supressors are legal in the UK too - on rifles. Suppressed my .243 tikka and .270 Sako. Helps with the recoil and apparently accuracy. the deer don't like it either way, suppressed or otherwise, but my hearing thanks me for it.
So, Subsonic is illegal in the US becasue you can't really here where it's comming from?

So, Subsonic is illegal in the US becasue you can't really here where it's comming from? No, anything below 1000fps is subsonic. Greg is referring to a particular type of ammunition made by FN Herstal of Belgium for the 5.7 pistol and its mate the P90 sub gun. The original rounds for the gun would indeed pierce body armor. They were specificly designed to pierce a type of military helmet at a certain distance, I don't remember the exact numbers.
You can make any round you want subsonic just by changing the load. How stable it flys and effective it is down range will change. The most popular rifle caliber to suppress is 7.62x51 (.308). The most popular pistol caliber is .22 followed by 9mm. (9mm only because most subguns are 9mm) I'll post some pics of suppressors I have when I get home.

Really? That's interesting, I never would have guessed that.
In my mind that says as much about the glass as the gun though. I'm amazed at how strong it is - I once watched a retractable cord thingie pull out of the ceiling and slam into the windshield of a Mercedes - I could see the windshield give a little then spit the thing off... onto the hood... where it proceeded to put a nice crease in the metal.
It would have been cool to see, but it was my car. :(

9mm rounds suck.... Sure, anything can kill given the right round placement, but I'd rather have something with more stopping power. We used to kill stray/rabid dogs in Iraq with a 9mm beretta, you'd empty 5 rounds into a damn dog and it would keep running like nothing ever happened. :BangHead disclaimer: I like dogs, but these things were rabid, flea and disease infested, disgusting creatures

9mm do suck, the old millitary personel, who were issued the 1911A .45 ACP swore by it. The muzzle blast alone was enough to make someone think twice, not to mention the devastating shock a .45 does to the body.

Right about that, unfortunately the Geneva Convention has banned the use of any type of hollow point rounds for use by the millitary. I use Federal Hydrashocks in my .40 Glocks for personal defense. Talk about the best of both worlds 45-9mm, stopping power, and velocity.

the guy who owns the range where i shoot has a police video illustrating this fact
the 9mm slug is TOO LIGHT to penetrate a windshield/laminated glass except if it is at a 90 degree angle to that glass.... and, even then, it doesn't penetrate consistently
a .40 bullet can penetrate at an angle usually
while a .45 will almost every time
it's all about the WEIGHT of the projectile, apparently
9mm ammo is the cheapest (over .22 caliber) on the market
and 9mm guns are cheaper to police forces
but..... there were far too many instances where the STOPPING POWER of the 9mm was insufficient to stop a would-be attacker
for instance.....
an LEO is trying to "subdue" a drunk..... or drugged-out assailant....
shooting him in the chest with a 9mm just PISSES HIM OFF and long before he dies.... or collapses he can still attack the LEO enough to cause him harm
with a larger caliper bullet you can stop that criminal in his tracks BEFORE he can attack the LEO

A 9mm hydrashock round is just as good when it comes to stopping power. I guess its due to preference, that's why I have both
i only carry MagSafe in my carry guns
http://www.magsafeonline.com/
same principle as your HYDROSHOCK
but.....
i'd still rather shoot a .45 MagSafe than a 9mm one :)

Pah! What a bunch of girly girl weapons.
Just call me Bond... James Bond.
The Walther PPK/S .380 ACP. Wish my hands were small enough to actually shoot the thing...
i've always LOVED this gun
and they do make MagSafe for it
i leave that ammo in my Beretta Tomcat (.32 ACP)
your .380 would be better
and the slide won't slice your hand off like my Tomcat if you aren't careful :(

magsafe, they don't go through walls as a design feature right?
yes....
that's why it is the PREFERRED ammo for air marshals
won't penetrate the seats for the SKIN of the plane
though i doubt that very very much
spalding12
01-08-2007, 04:18 PM
one more thing
most shooting experts will tell you that IF you are going to use MagSafe, etc.... in your guns at home
ALWAYS put a regular bullet in the chamber
because.....
if you shoot a loved one by mistake, they have a MUCH BETTER CHANCE OF LIVING if you hit them with a bullet that will go RIGHT THROUGH
and, if you were shooting a criminal you are going to shoot MULTIPLE TIMES and that MagSafe or equivalent slug will be in positions 2 thru .........

Greg, thanks for the attention.
This gun was one of 100 manufactured from "Graham" - a dutch Paintball legend. First batch was made of 100 pcs. second batch (witch mine is from) also was made of 100 pcs. I got another "Spearhead" Cocker from Graham with E-Frame (from the third batch) but sold it. This one I will keep. Itīs with custom bolt, custom air, and works fast like hell (if adjusted prpooperly).
Itīs really one of 100 guns sold... and I will keep it for ever.
btw. has someone a cheap Angel for me to play :biggrin

Are we talking about paintball guns now..lol.
Well I pay'd a lil over a G for my 05 Planet Eclipse Ego. Its got a ton of mods on it now. My Empire V2 sound activated hopper is suppose to force feed 32-35 balls per second. I have no idea if it does, all I know is, is that if I turn my gun on full auto it shoots ropes!!!! Fun for me and not for the kids. But reg fields dont allow me to do that. Everything is all electric and a big pain in the ass. I easily have a couple grand tied up in paintball guns, parts, and gear.
Otherwise all my other guns are for hunting.
.22 long rifle
20ga single break open action (1st gun when I was 11)
12ga Mossberg 500 full camo
12ga Benelli Supernova Max 4 camo (duck killer)
CVA 50cal black powder
russian SKS, this is gun is alot of fun.
On order Mossberg 835 Turkey, bad ass 12ga

Interesting read.
One comment reminded of the one time I shot hand guns at a range. A friend of mine brought his 22 and I shot that first. Pop. Pop pop. no biggie.
Then he handed me his 45. Yikes. I had a hard time hanging on to that one. Every time I pulled the trigger I was afraid I was going to drop it.
The worst thing was... for about two years after that, I could tell when it was going to rain because the knuckle on the base of my left thumb would start to ache.
Hence my interest in smaller calibers I suppose!

I'm not big on posting, but this requires comment. I was in Iraq as well. Saw a lot of action and quite a few dogs. Never saw the need to shoot them. I guess some did.
When were you there? I was there right when the war kicked off, when we went in an occupied different areas. How about sleeping out in the open, or in old shelters with no doors and having packs of dogs coming through your perimeter at night stealing your food or pissing/crapping near all of your equipment.
Now days most soldiers in Iraq have air conditioned trailers, big PX's to go to, movies, Subway, Burger King.....we had a cot, MRE's, wrote letters (no phone or internet), and burned barrels full of human crap every day. The last thing we wanted were packs of flea infested creatures coming through our AO and making a mess, and with the other stresses of war shooting a few rabid dogs barely required a 2nd thought.

Having bought holsters from just about every known manufacturer, I can assure you that the Mitch Rosen stuff is so nice, that once you buy one of his holsters you will buy the gun to fit in it, quit your job, become a police officer so you have a badge and don't have to carry concealed if you don't want to, and wear it every where.

That One was built around 1980.( he built several longslides)
Clark barrel & Link. (if i remember correctly)

it is two slides welded together

He was also picked as one of Americas top 100 pistolsmits by "Handgunner" magazine

Sorry for not replying sooner Greg, yes it was basically the same design but had a longer barrel. The thing had a massive power factor with factory rounds, hence why it was on the restricted part of the shooting range. Not pleasant having factory jacket fragments coming back at you.

Hey David, I saw the post where you said you knew Clark Sr. Cool man, I am from the old school too. Shooting almost three 2700 every month back in the old days.
Clark made about 3 pistols for me, one of them was a long slide too, and a reguler slide. Both of mine had the the Bo-Mar heavy rib and something else on too. He also, put together what I consider one of the first combat guns(when others were shooting revolvers for combat).
I had Clark put together a Colt Commander, accurized to shoot hard ball, but can handle wad cutters. Low profile rear site and a fast draw front. I use to carry that baby with loaded with 7.2 grains of Unique and a 185 grain bullet. When I stopped shooting I sold most of mine.
Right now, I only have 3 left, and still occasionally hit the range. Heavy Slide 1911, she still shoot tight, and my beloved Hi Standard Military. Use to have both barrels, lost one. I use to have a 41 too, 7 1/2 and 5 1/2.. More partial to the hi standard. I use to talk to Hensily and Gibbs, RCBS, and Starr over the phone in customizing my bullet molds and dies.
Here is my two sweethearts, and they still know how to sandbagged too!! :biggrin The Marines down at Quantico kept my 1911 shooting tight. I use to be there every weekend for matchs. Oh the old days!! :drool

Cool, but I hope you don't pull me back into guns for my main hobby!! :biggrin Not enough time or money!! :biggrin
When I was shooting, I MADE everything I shot except for 22 rimfire. About twice a year I would ask the rangemaster at my local outdoor range could I dig up the pits, and would proceed and dig up all the spent bullets. Then I would visit the local scrap metal places and pick up linotype. Then I would melt down all the scrap bullets into ingots, and do the same with the linotype. When I cast the bullets, according to what gun I would vary the hardness of the bullets. Then about 4 times a year, I would have a casting party casting and reloading bullets to have enough to shoot all year. You shoot a lot when you banging 2700 point match 2 and 3 times a month.! :)
Since target shooting was my main love, I would cast thousands of 45 and 38 caliber wadcutters the most.
I would slug all my barrels and get RCBS to make sizing dies to match my specs.. Man, the more I write about this, the more I smell gunsmoke, and the smell of hot lead.:)
Two days ago, I went to the range with the 1911 and 22 target pistol. Trying to find standard velocity 22 rimfire ammo was quite a chore. Only guns stores carry that. Walmart and other places look at you like crazy if you asked them for standard velocity 22 rimfire cartridges.
After banging out some 22s, and I could still hold kinda close and all the ones out of the black at 25 yds, I could call before I looked through the spotting scope. On shooting my 1911, I only had 6 rounds left over, I squeeze the first one off at 25 yds, slow fire, I hit the x ring. I didn't shoot the rest I left on that good shot!! :badteeth 45 cal target rounds cost an arm and a leg. If I do any more shooting, I will have to start reloading again in some form or fashion.
Forgive the long drabble, I loved shooting just as much as I love sportbikes now, and you all bring up this subject. So, writing about it brings back many, many memories, plus I am trying to pass the time until my 1098 gets here...:badteeth :badteeth

I used to shoot semi-regular with a mate of mine many years ago. He had a nice large frame .22 revolver with a 10" barrel. Wouldn't hit the broad side of a barn until you had put at least 50 odd rounds through the clean barrel, then you saw your groups gradually reduce to amazing accuracy at 25yards. Very fun pistol when your GONG shooting (old plow disc set 75 yards away and about 50 feet up a hill hanging off a heavy steel cable). You knew you had a hit when the disc 'gonged'. First person to miss buys the beers after the range is closed and everyone has packed up the artillery. :)

Everything, brass, copper, lead (not powder) has gone through the roof. I used to buy 230grain, brass jacketed ball ammo for around $120/1000. Now it's closer to $220/1000.
And .308 has to be the worst. Military surplus from Portugal, England or Austria was about $120/1000. I now pay $300/1000.

:eek Wow, I can't believe there are so many gun owners here !!
I just bought 2 new SA 1911's, one traditional 5" barrel , and an Ultra Compact 3.5" barrel for carry. I can't wait to take them to the range :biggrin

Hi Coleman:
I shoot at least once a month sometimes twice.
backed off form once or twice a week.
I only handload, again except 22. if you need good relatively
inexpensive 22 try SK or Wolf (same manufacture). you can mail order it from J&G or Bruno shooters supply. It runs about 380.00 a case (5000 rounds). its not bad ammo and is made in East
Germany and UPS will delever it to your door.
6.5 Unique behind a 185 semiwad works for me, (target load)
I Like the Highstandards as well. the old Hamdens were great
Guns. but i still prefer the 41 because it feels like the 45
and is well built. also like the BOMAR ribs have a new one sitting here that is going on an old Rand slide.
I havent shot a pistol match in a long time, just rimfire Benchrest, its more challenging than Centerfire BR (some might disagree but most CF guys cant handle the frustration of RF).
my RF group sizes run in the High .1's to mid .2's
at 50 and shoot sub .5 MIA at 100 yds frequently (but always
sub 1.0 MIA) with the 22
I usually cast wheelweights +tin. have an old Starr sizer
that is super (Bonanza and RCBS as Press).
Any Way, Nice Guns Shoot more often :biggrin :biggrin :biggrin

Yeah, I can believe it. And the price of gun powder and primers most likely have gone up too. And don't talk about the restrictions and gun laws. Wow!!
It's much cheaper to read here and reminise about the old days than going out and trying it again. :biggrin
Plus, in order to shoot straight with a handgun, you gotta practice, practice, and practice, then shoot, shoot, study, shoot, dryfire, study, dryfire,etc..:biggrin !!

Man, it is nice to talk about guns again. :biggrin These dam bikes are running me into the poorhouse!!
On the 22s, at the matches all you saw was the 41 and the Hi Standard. Most of the military used the 41..The both equal, just a matter of preference.
All my old reloading stuff is gone. :( That stuff is un-replaceable. Starr sizer here too. That was a dream. So, was my lyman pot. Let me stop.. It's driving me crazy..
Your pop must be a hellva pistolsmith, to build you that long slide. 3.5 bullseye was my target load with the 185 WC, and that 7.2 unique was what I carried in the commander as a defense weapon. Never pulled in anger neither..
Another carry gun of mine that I use to carry was the Hi Standard 22 mag derringer.. I use to brag that this little baby pack more punch that the what the police were using then (round nose 38 special).
Lately this track bug done bit me, and there would be no time for shooting, I like to shoot good, and to shoot good takes time and practice..
Anyway, it was a treat to see your posts, and to mention Clark Sr.'s name. I also had 38 special made by Clark, I got that from Gil Hebard guns, that was ingraved with his name. Be worth a small fortune now.. Clark was in Shrevport, La then too.
Again, super great posts man!!!:1

I have to admit that they are my favorites (although I only have a couple)

Hi Coleman:
Wow, Haven't Heard Gils name in a long time.
Mom & Dad and Mary & Gil were very Close friends.
Gil was an outstanding shot, he won the Camp Perry senior Championship from 1974 to 1978 (don't remember after that),
was in the 2600 club and one of the top shooters
in the US for many years. Last time I was back in Knoxville,Illinois. (79) Dad an I went to visit Gil.
Gil and i had a blast, seems Gil liked things that went boom
had a mess of M-80's. Gil an I spent some time chuckin em out the back door at the warehouse.:)
You are right about the time issue. Have a good friend who's been trying to get me into vintage racing (AHRMA).
Time and money is all it takes, both in short supply here:(
Hell who knows i could talk you into shooting and you could talk me in racing :1poke (shooting is cheeper!!)

The U.S. Armed forces had the 1911 as it sidearm for 52 years. Don't think no other weapon could make a bold statement like that. The 9mm coming on, was give in to NATO. However, I see a lot of orgs coming back to the 1911, and everybody is making them.
The 1911 is dynasty that will live forever. :1

They should run you outta here!! Shameless to tempt up 1911 lovers like this, pure shameful.
I can barely afford this sportbike addiction. Now, I am taking on the highly acclaim Ducati. And now you tease, tempt me with these beautiful 1911s!! Shame, shame..
Now, does your company give big SENIOR CITIZEN DISCOUNTS????:badteeth
Gotta check out your site too.. dam..Why couldn't I be rich instead of so good looking.:(
I'm sure we can work something out. (that's one of the advantages of knowing the owner) If you appreciate a nice 1911, you will be astounded by the fit and finish of these guns. I'm not claiming any of the credit, Christopher builds them not me.
By the way, which weapon has been in service the longest? I think it is the M2HB machine gun. Or, is it the 1911? I know the 1911 is older, but was it placed in service later?

I just called one of my old shooting buddies, I showed him how to reload and the whole 9 yards way back when. He got a Shockley, he purchased from Gil Hebard, in prime condition too. Think it has an extended front sight. The Gil Hebard catlog was like a dream book. Got my TC sizing die and a zillion other things from Gil.
Since my old shooting buddy doesn't ride motorcycles, I sneakly tried to talk him into setting up his reload gear again, and pump out some 45s. He is thinking about it. If he does, then I gotta start hitting at least 3 or 4 times a month at the range.
Some of my ride buddies play golf to relax. Might start back shooting for relaxation.. Not trying to go clean at 25 yards like I used too. Take too much practice to do that. Not enough time..I am a freak-of-nature to be pushing the sportbike fast at this late in the game, don't want to overload this gift!!!:biggrin
Just want to say, life is full of sweet different plearsures that everybody can't understand, and I am glad I got the eye and taste for them. :)

Hey Greg, Sorry so late but here is the Beretta Tactical Pckg I was talking about. It came with a teflon coated serrated knife, 2clips (1 - 10rnd, 1 - 11rnd) and a aluminum case along with the normal ABS plastic one and a gun lock, etc. I purchased it in 00'. I havent had any work done to it, I just wanted to leave this one stock. I also found the pics of the 45-70 gvt but I will have to scan them. I dont have them electronically.
